Jabba the Hutt's presence in the Star Wars: A New Hope re-release is its largest head-scratcher. George Lucas made a number of changes to the original Star Wars trilogy in 1997 and again in 2011, but the addition of Jabba the Hutt in A New Hope tends to fly under the radar compared to the infamous "Han shot first" controversy.

Star Wars Why Lucas Added Jabba the Hutt & Boba Fett Into New Hope

By Nicholas Brooks Published Jul 31, 2021 While Jabba the Hutt was later added into Star Wars: A New Hope, his scene was cut from its initial release for a simple but important reason. The original Star Wars trilogy is notorious for being reworked in special editions.

The biggest change in A New Hope by far happens in the Cantina scene where Greedo, a Rodian bounty hunter, confronts Han Solo about his debts to Jabba the Hutt. This scene has been retouched many times: in 1977, Han Solo shot first, killing Greedo. Then George Lucas decided that this didn't fit Solo's archetype as a reluctant hero, so he had Greedo shoot first.

And I think Han meant it more as a cold joke. He does have a very dry sense of humour. Even so, it's definitely not what George Lucas intended in the script. 20 harge008 • 2 yr. ago

One of the more notable changes was the reintroduction of Jabba the Hutt into "Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope." Lucas regrettably had to omit the character in the theatrical cut of the game.

The scene between Jabba and Han Solo from Star Wars: A New Hope was originally shot for the 1977 release with a human character played by actor Declan Mulholland. The initial plan was to have the actor replaced with stop-motion animation, but due to budget cuts, the sequence was never finished.
